First Aid Badger

First Aid Badger gives each Badger the basic skills and knowledge needed to respond to a first aid emergency.

This subject provides Badgers with the knowledge and experience to:

  • describe what is meant by ‘first aid’
  • know how to make an emergency call
  • show how to communicate with a casualty
  • care for a casualty
  • identify the contents of a first aid kit
  • know where the first aid kit is kept at home, school and Badgers
  • undertake a primary survey, including dangers to themselves and using DRABC
  • know when to use the recovery position
  • demonstrate how to place a casualty in the recovery position
  • know when someone is choking and how to treat them
  • know the signs when someone feels faint or has fainted and how to treat them
  • recognise an asthma attack and how to respond
  • recognise and be able to respond to a major bleed
  • know the signs of shock and how to treat it
  • know how to recognise and deal with minor bleeds
  • understand the principles of infection prevention and control (IPC)
  • recognise a burn and scald and know how to treat them
  • know how to recognise a bite and sting and how to deal with them
  • be able to recognise and respond to a fractured bone, dislocation injury, sprain and strain
  • participate in simulation activities that consolidate their learning
  • enjoy learning first aid skills and feel proud of being able to use them effectively.
