Monday 3 March 2025: St John Ambulance is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Killick BEM as the first aid charity’s Chief Operating Officer, effective from early May.
Matthew joins St John Ambulance from Scouts, where he served as Executive Director of Operations from July 2023. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing all operations, including Safety and Safeguarding, Member Support, Growth and Communities, and Youth programmes. He worked with volunteers and staff throughout the UK to ensure the safe and effective delivery of services.
Prior to his tenure at Scouts, Matthew spent six years with the Red Cross, beginning as UK Director of Event First Aid & Ambulance Services before becoming UK Director of Crisis Response and Community Resilience. During his time at the Red Cross, he led some of the largest operational responses in recent history, addressing critical issues such as the Covid pandemic, the Afghanistan evacuation, and the conflict in Ukraine. In recognition of his exemplary service during the Covid crisis, Matthew was awarded a British Empire Medal in the 2021 Honours list.
With over 25 years of experience in senior operational and commercial business development roles within prominent charities, including Barnardo’s and Catch 22, Matthew brings a wealth of expertise to St John Ambulance.
“I’m truly excited to be joining an organisation that plays such a vital role in society,” said Matthew. “St John is an incredible charity, and I look forward to working alongside the dedicated employees and volunteers who make such a difference every day to the lives of others.”
Shona Dunn, CEO of St John Ambulance says: “I’m delighted to have Matthew joining us at this important time. As we focus on our growth and impact, I am confident that Matthew’s experience and passion will be pivotal in helping us achieve our goals.”
