Here is what to expect when you apply to be a St John Ambulance volunteer. Follow our three step process:
Send an application
Once you’ve decided on a volunteer role, you can apply for it online by finding a vacancy near you. We'll be in touch about your application after the closing date.
If you can’t apply online, please get in touch.
Meet with us
You'll be invited to have a conversation about volunteering at a selection event or in an interview, if your application is successful. We do short-list for some of our roles, so there may be a delay.
For clinical or community roles, such as community support or event first aid, you'll be invited to interview face-to-face. Roles such as trainers, youth team, and safeguarding will have a more informal interview. This could be face-to-face or over the phone.
Induction and training
Following your interview, you'll be provided with key dates and information about training for your role. Once you've completed your training and all pre-volunteering checks have been completed by HR, you are then ready to volunteer!
Pre-volunteering checks
We complete pre-volunteering checks on everyone for a number of regulatory and legal reasons. It is also good volunteering practise.
All our pre-volunteering checks must be completed before you can start volunteering with us.
Volunteer roles within a clinical setting, for example working with ambulances or young people, require a higher level of screening. These checks can take longer to complete so please be patient with our HR team.
